A World on the Brink of Disaster - Asim Siddiq

What is the most pressing issue in world politics today?

When constructing an answer to this question I looked at issues that posed the greatest risk to humanity. Acknowledging climate change, poverty, and various religious conflicts throughout the world as major issues is essential. These issues are MAJOR threats to humanity and need an uber amount of attention. However, the threat of imminent nuclear destruction is something that should weigh heavily on the mind of all people. Additionally, the threat of complacent leaders driven by nationalistic agendas is just as harmful. In a constant power struggle, countries remain to busy trying to one-up another rather than solving any real issues.

Since 2017 North Korea has tested "over 117 long-range cruise missiles" capable of carrying nuclear loads (NTI Database). With U.S President Donald Trump refusing to put his foot down on North Korea's belligerence, the nations of the world sit in wait for someone to take action. President Trump also chose to back out the Iran Nuclear Deal struck by the Obama administration. Subsequently, his failure to strike a new deal has brought Iran one step closer to gaining nuclear capability. Additionally, the U.S failed to renew the INF treaty with Russia. The treaty was a central part of disarming both nations. Tension is not isolated to these nations. India and Pakistan also had a recent border conflict which sparked the potential of nuclear warfare. Even more recently, an explosion at a Russian weapons testing facility created much skepticism towards the country's nuclear program. The blast at the Nyonska weapons testing facility released a "handful of rapidly decaying radioactive isotopes" (Business Insider). There is no need for me to give a scientifical explanation of the effects of radioactive isotopes. The words should scare you enough. Any sort of nuclear incident would cripple humanity. Action needs to be taken. Our leaders must be held accountable for sustaining a balance between all nations.

The first step in combating an issue is acknowledging its existence. Waiving this issue off to clear our conscious is exactly what complacent leaders want. We the people need to get involved in our local political communities to make sure we put leaders in office who are dedicated to ending this crisis. Leaders who put the safety and solitude of humanity before potential photo ops and their own egos. Leaders who are willing to put aside nationalism for the greater good of humanity. The U.S needs to be a leader on this issue. Entering into a new deal with Iran should be at the top of any U.S president's list along with holding countries like North Korea accountable for deviance. Restoring the INF treaty is also key when it comes to maintaining a balance within Russia. Nations must come together and realize that we are one conflict or one bad decision away from destruction. We need to realize it is us who will ultimately pay the price for the decisions made by our leaders. Our leaders will have bunkers to retire too. Humanity will be left to pick up the pieces. So while we still have the chance, let's make a change.
