Government Corruption

In current-day politics, one of the most pressing issue is government corruption. Many would believe that government corruption mostly occurs in international countries; however, this country, and others, are victims of this. For instance, the United State's administration has converted into a mockery since the induction of the new president. Not to mention additional countries such as Mexico, Venezuela, and Russia who are also examples  of executives that leach on power. With such leaders, these nation can be labeled as 'politically unstable' and 'entertainment for the world.' Also, not only can both outsiders and citizens recognize that these countries are acting unjustly, but it is the fact that it is allowed.  For instance, since Trump became president, he has used his executive power to benefit himself. A few examples are using his authority to refuse releasing his tax returns, supporting and encouraging white supremacy, and most importantly obstructing justice. If you were to travel a decade into the past and tell our society that in the near-future our country will experience massive amounts of shootings, restrictions on abortion (and its penalties), and a digression in society, I do not think people would believe it.
Furthermore, why is this still condoned? I believe that Trump's influence and money created an "invisible hand" that control politicians and officials on Capitol Hill and beyond. How are we, our government, any different from Russia? Both oppress inhabitants without any moral concern. Not to mention when officials and the media voice their opposition, both executive leaders claim that they, the opposers, are wrong and that they, the leaders, are correct. With this evidence, there is a clear indication that the United States passed the brink of corruption.
Similarly to the United State's corruption, Mexico and Venezuela are victims of drug trafficking and impractical police officials. Since both countries do not have a stable central government who can effectively regulate the police, crime, and drug war, it is difficult for citizens to believe that their government can provide safety. For instance, since Venezuela borders, Colombia—one of the most recognized drug-trafficking Latin-American country—it is without a doubt that Colombia's illegal activities influence Venezuela's government. In addition, in the past few months, Venezuela has experienced political tension. Since the "actual" president was denounced by an acting president, it fueled a revolt. Not to mention that the government is in a socialist state. Hence, it is difficult for citizens to trust an executive cabinet that has done nothing but worsen the economy and created far more hardships than needed.
Likewise, Mexico went through the same problem. With the previous president, Mexico was stuck in the drug war; however, nothing was done to fix it. Yes, the president remarked that he would find solutions, but it never occurred. For both countries, citizens are not at fault since their government does operate the way it should. I understand that it is difficult for a president to fix all of their countries issues; however, that is no excuse to create a plan to better their nation, to then with last resorts, outreach to other nations. We are all citizens of the same world.

  1. When you mentioned the "invisible hand" of President Trump, I completely agree and see how his control of the U.S. economy is economic upturn veiled behind corruption. Since the start of his administration, he has been praised for America's job growth, decreasing inflation, and overall upward trend of economic growth. He has since enacted many policies that do not work towards benefiting the economy; notably, the China trade war and increase of tariffs on both sides can be greatly damaging to the global economy as it will decrease international trade. Even now, the economy is not at the same upward trend, as the trade cycle goes, a downturn to recession occurs after an expansion. I know I am certainly interested to see how the trade war will have lasting effects on the world and what policies will be enacted in the future to bring the economy back from the influence of these corrupt rulers.

  2. What's the opposite of corruption? What would it look like for a government *not* to be corrupt? Any examples come to mind?
